Camps & Classes
Winter Camp 2023
Our FREE 2023 Winter Camp was held December 18th - 22nd at the Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus. It was our largest Girls Code Savannah camp yet with a record 55 students in 5th - 8th grade attending from across all 8 Savannah Chatham County Public School Districts!
In two Georgia Southern University computer labs, parallel coding classes took place — one for beginner website coders and another for Summer Camp 2023 & Fall 2023 Saturday Sesssions returning coders.
The beginner‐level coding lab taught introduction to HTML and CSS for those new to website coding while the second coding lab allowed continuing website coders to build upon their already-created websites and to learn new JavaScript programming skills, making their current websites more dynamic.
In addition to building their real-world coding skills throughout the week, campers also engaged with several female guest instructors and speakers who inspired them with interactive sessions and stories of how they are using tech daily to develop their own careers, businesses, and dreams of the future.
Camp ended with a giant pizza party and Camp Showcase where campers showed off their new and and expanded websites to Savannah community leaders, the local media, family, and friends.
Fall 2023 Saturday Sessions
Building Websites That Really Stack Up
This fall Girls Code Savannah held four FREE "Saturday Sessions" among the stacks of the Live Oak Public Libraries. The sessions took place from 11:00 AM ‐ 1:30 PM on consecutive Saturdays from Oct 14th - Nov 4th and were held at a different library location each week.
Many girls attending the Fall 2023 Saturday Sessions learned real-world coding skills for the first time. They used HTML & CSS coding languages to build their own websites from a blank screen.
Our returning Summer Camp 2023 students continued to advance their website coding skills during these sessions. They learned additional HTML & CSS code to add dynamic graphics to the websites they began coding in July. The code to create a rotating photo gallery like the one seen above is one example.
The Saturday Sessions photos seen rotating here are a sample of those taken and donated by one of Savannah's top event photographers, Bud Johnson. His generous gift will greatly support Girls Code Savannah advertising efforts as we continue to work to get the word out about this important program.
We are incredibly thankful to all members of the Savannah community who donate their time, talents, and resources in support of this rapidly-growing community of tech-talented girls. Please contact us or donate if you would like to provide support.
Summer Camp 2023
Web Development Takes Flight
Last year Girls Code Savannah Summer Camp explored the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. This year, campers were flying high!
Our FREE Summer Camp was held July 10-14 at the Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus. The theme was centered around aerospace and aviation.
Campers visited Fly Corps Aviation, where female pilots and flight instructors shared their career journeys, and the Fly Corps Aviation team treated campers to an up-close look at flight-related technologies and aircrafts on the hanger.
Back at the Georgia Southern University computer lab, campers built computer games using MIT Scratch and coded their own websites using HTML and CSS.
Camp ended with a Camp Showcase where campers showed off their new computer games and websites to Savannah community leaders, the local media, family, and friends.
