Back On Campus & Bigger

After a very successful 2023 Summer Camp, our FREE, week-long Girls Code Savannah 2023 Winter Camp found us back on the Georgia Southern University-Armstrong Campus from December 18th‐22nd. Thanks to the Georgia Southern Business Innovation Group and the Armstrong Campus Computer Science Department, campers were, once again, treated to a mini college campus experience. With 55 Girls Code Savannah students excited to either begin or advance the real-world coding of their personal websites, we expanded our 2023 Winter Camp to include two computer science classrooms.

Website Development

Like our 2023 Summer Camp students, our 2023 Winter Camp beginner website coders learned HTML & CSS to build their own websites from a blank screen. Just down the hall, our returning website coders transitioned into true computer programmers as they wrote their first JavaScript functions. Using JavaScript to complement their advancing HTML & CSS website coding skills allowed them to begin making their websites more data-dynamic. Be sure to check out both our beginner and returning students' websites as we add them to our Student Websites Page.

Inspiring Guest Instructors & Speakers

During the week campers also engaged with female guest instructors and speakers who inspired them with interactive sessions and stories of how they are using tech daily to develop their own careers, businesses, and dreams of the future. On Monday, Jessie May Wolfe, a creative, entrepreneur, and founder of the HeartRise Method, interactively taught campers the basics of how to use color theory to inspire emotion from website viewers and how to use the color wheel to create a cohesive color palette for web applications and graphic designs.

Activities

As usual, each day of camp included fun activities to allow campers to get to know one another and continue to build Girls Code Savannah community vibes. Binary bracelets (where camper's initials are colorfully represented in binary computer code) were back by popular demand, and the week ended with a coding golden egg hunt full of prizes.

The Girls Code Savannah Team

As the number of Girls Code Savannah students continues to grow, so does our Girls Code Savannah team. We welcomed our newest team member, Georgia Tech student Michelle Ngo, during Winter Camp. We had such a great time teaching and hanging out with our campers. It's hard to say who enjoys camp more — us or our students!

Winter Camp 2023 Showcase

On Friday, family members and Savannah community leaders gathered for an end-of-camp pizza party to celebrate with campers as they proudly displayed their new coding skills and personal websites.

Thank You To Our Girls Code Savannah Winter Camp 2023 Sponsors!

Girls Code Savannah Winter Camp 2023 would not have been possible without the space provided by Georgia Southern University, the support of its Business Innovation Group, and the generous funding provided by the City of Savannah, the Howmet Aerospace Foundation, and the Howmet Women's Network. We are truly thankful for their collective desire to provide this free opportunity for students in Savannah Chatham County Public Schools to acquire technology and coding skills as they work hard to develop their dreams.
